This is the first audio-only post that, personally, is the format that allows me to really listen and process intently without visual distraction. It would make for a great listen on your run. Let me know what you think.
As always thank you for sharing and subscribing to support these conversations going forward.

Victor Diaz owns and operates Renegade Running in Oakland, California. He describes himself as both a runner and cyclist but found his love for design through well crafted cycling products. As he saw a similar design evolution kick off in running he felt inspired to start Renegade.
I hope this conversation provides a load of insights and inspiration for runners, retailers and brands alike.
“Renegade Running was built on the dream of a diverse running community that reflects the revolutionary spirit of Oakland, our hometown. We have created space for runners of all backgrounds and abilities and do our best to ensure everyone feels welcomed and supported.”
Victor and his team at Renegade have, first-and-foremost, built a community by listening, learning and “expanding the tent” to welcome more people into the sport. He’s adamant when he says they are NEVER transactional in their community relationships.
We discuss a LOT of things in 45 minutes including but not limited to:
what he looks for in the brands they carry and collaborate with
the competition, or lack-there-of, between big and small brands
the one undisputed contribution from run crews
Renegade’s strategy to stay current
some predictions for the future of brands and products in running
how to honestly and authentically enter a new market
his next level vision for a run shop as a true community hub
the crowdfunding model they chose to allow expansion to Los Angeles
A future collab idea between the two of us in LA
During a career in public education Victor developed a level of empathy and purpose that is honestly on another level. It’s no doubt the secret to Renegade’s success. His approach is the absolute future of run specialty IMO because of a deep focus on design and a double-down on community with an absolute aversion to anything resembling a transactional relationship. In fact, that approach might be the leading strategy across other areas of running as well.
If you’re in the Bay Area go check-out their shop on Grand near Lake Merritt, or in Los Angeles find the newest shop on Sunset in Silver Lake. They can be found digitally on the website or Instagram.
